14. Renewing or Extending an Associateship

14.1 -- You may initiate a request to renew or extend your Associateship award by sending the request to the Program Administrator in time to avoid interrupting tenure, preferably at least two months prior to the date on which your tenure ends.

14.2 -- Requests should be made on the form entitled "Application for Extension or Renewal of Award," which is available on request from the Associateship Programs office, and be accompanied by a completed "Proposed Plan for Continued Research" form.

14.3 -- Your Adviser must complete an "Evaluation of Associate by Research Adviser" form. Both the renewal form and the evaluation should be directed to the Associateship Programs office through the Laboratory Representative.

14.4 -- Renewal or extension of tenure is not intended to initiate major new research but rather to complete, to a reasonable point, your originally approved research program.

14.5 -- Renewal or extension is neither automatic nor guaranteed. The period of the requested extension should be determined in consultation with your Adviser, who can advise you on the continued availability of research support.
