EXERCISE 13

see solution

motion: TOC for Knowledge Concepts, Exercises, and Solutions

Measurements of the same galaxies mentioned in Exercise 12 above have been made
many times since 1931. A sample of measurements made since 1995 yield the
following:

GALAXY NAME VELOCITY DISTANCE
----------- -------- --------

NGC 4472 997 km/s 14.4 Mpc
NGC 3193 1399 21.0
NGC 6824 3386 46.6
NGC 7619 3762 56.7
NGC 384 4287 57.2
NGC 2563 4900 75.5
NGC 1277 5066 68.3
NGC 4853 7660 115.0
Baade 24 12500 169.0
Leo 1 20200 302.0

From these data, do the same thing as you did in Exercise 12 - calculate
the Hubble constant, estimate the random error, and discuss the systematic
errors. How much difference is there between Hubble and Humason's results
and these results?
