PART II
Psychological Techniques
IN PART II WE DISCUSS A VARIETY of psychological and social-psycho-
logical processes. Our discussions are oriented largely toward the
particular techniques chosen for evaluation, yet in each chapter we
attempt to draw on a broader literature concerning the processes being
influenced learning, performance, mental states, stress, and social in-
teractions. More detailed reviews of relevant research can be found in
the papers that were prepared as background for the committees work
(see Appendix B).
By weaving insights about basic processes into the discussions of
techniques, we hope to convey to the reader a larger message about
techniques in general. There are, of course, many other procedures
designed to influence psychological processes, and any particular tech-
r~ique is likely to affect more than one process. The chapters that follow
are intended to suggest implications for a broad range of techniques to
enhance human performance.
