to do so. Establishing causal processes leading to these rare and heinous outcomes is not the only scientific approach possible in the service of the search for prevention and control. Case studies like those presented here are essential, appropriate, and scientific tools for use in this search. Only by carefully analyzing those patterns that do exist in the unfolding of these occurrences, using the full range of data available, can we make headway.
