-~- Attachment B Statement of Task Committee to Review the Desalination and Water Purifi~on Technology Roadmap A committee famed by the WSIB will review the Desalination and Water Purification Technology RoacTmap (Roadmap) developed for the Bureau of Reclamation by Sandia National L~5Qr~tOLiCS' as suggested by COO8ECSS. The review will help both organizations make desalination science and technology investment decisions and select Mare research' development' anc! demonstration projects. This objective evaluation of the Desalination and Water Purification Technology Roadmap will address the following questions: ~ Does the Desalination and Water Purification Teclmo10gy Roadrnap present an appropriate and et-tect-~ve course to help address future freshwater needs in the United States? 2. Can further investments advance the implementation of clesalir~tion by significantly reducing its cost and otherwise addressing issues associated with its increased use? 3. :C:>oes the Roadmap correctly itienti:fy the key technical and scientific issues that angst be resolved so that desalination can be made inure cost-eff~ctive? 4. Are there any missing research areas Rom the RQadmap that should be includecl? 5. What should be the general priorities for investments? ~ What are the best roles for federal agencies, national laboratories, other research institutions' utiiities7 an] the private sector to help imbued the Desalination and Water Purification Technology Roadmap~ Following the filet meeting' the ARC committee will provide to the Bureau of Reclamation ~ vow brief letter re~?°d providing an initial assessment of the Desalination arid Water Purification Technology Research Road~nap' including its potential use in helping to set federal investment priorities (i.e., this would address item ~ of the six items delimited in the Statement of Task Se£tiOO7 above). A second committee meeting will then be held in July or August. Such ~ schedule would allow completion of the review report addressing all six task items by September or Qe(ober' Allowed by publi$~tion7 briefings, and other dissemination activities thorough December.

The letter report reviews the Bureau of Reclamation and Sandia National Laboratories’ jointly produced Roadmap, which is intended to serve as a guide for federal agencies and other public and private organizations in their desalination research and technology investment decisions through 2020. The report recommends the continuation of these activities and commends the Bureau of Reclamation and Sandia National Laboratories for providing the leadership in this important national initiative.
