APPENDIX B 13 Appendix Bâ Statement of Task At the request of the US Army, the National Academies will assemble a committee of scientists with appropriate expertise to conduct a systematic review of the anthrax screening and mitigation procedures and methods employed and planned at the Defense Post Office and their remote delivery facilities to protect the Pentagon from attack by anthrax or other biological agents via the mail. The study will consider threat information provided by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency on potential attack methods that should be mitigated and the likelihood that they might occur. The facilities, equipment, and techniques will be assessed for efficiency and efficacy to detect, neutralize, and mitigate anthrax and other biological agents introduced via the mail. In a letter report, the committee will summarize its assessment and make recommendations for continuing or modifying the current approaches to safeguard the Pentagon community from attacks introduced via the mail.
