These activities foster higher-order thinking and allow students to be assessed in areas that have historically been extremely difficult to gauge with standard paper-and-pencil exams. This type of assessment can be very expensive to administer, although Future City relies on volunteer judges local to the competition venue. The instrument does not allow for individual assessment, which may present accountability problems. Despite the detailed judge’s manual, it may be extremely difficult to grade such projects consistently.
