• Communication technology—end-of-year basic test (May 2003)

For a touchtone telephone which uses two tones per character, how many tones are used to make the signals for the twelve buttons?

  1. 2

  2. 7

  3. 12

  4. 27

(Suggested correct answer: B)

Committee Observations

The pre-test, with its open-ended format, tests higher order thinking skills at the applications, analysis, and evaluation levels. It also assesses students’ common sense, intelligence, and creativity, but these are not closely related to knowledge of specific technological systems. The end-of-year basic test is fact oriented and specific to course content and, therefore, not appropriate for assessing technological literacy in a general sense. A list of 36 cognitive specifications that were used to formulate the pre-test could be used to design an assessment of technological literacy.
