International Benchmarking of U.S. Chemical Engineering Research Competitiveness Appendix A Statement of Task At the request of the National Science Foundation Engineering Directorate, the National Academies will perform an international benchmarking exercise to determine the standing of the U.S. research enterprise relative to its international peers in the fields of chemical engineering. The benchmarking exercise will address the following: What is the position of U.S. research in chemical engineering relative to that in other regions or countries? What are the key factors influencing relative U.S. performance in chemical engineering (i.e., human resources, equipment, infrastructure, etc.)? On the basis of current trends in the United States and worldwide, extrapolate to the U.S. relative position in the near and longer-term future.
