APPENDIX B Supplemental Data This appendix) presents a variety of data to supplement the discus- sion of sexual behavior in Chapter 2. Table B-1 summarizes data from several studies of the proportions of young men and young women reporting first sexual intercourse at (or before) various ages. These data span the period 1958-1973; it should be notes! that most of these studies used convenience samples drawn from particular high schools or colleges. Table B-2 presents parallel data (broken down by birth cohort) from a national probability sample of young women conducted in 1982 (the National Survey of Family Growth, or NSFG), and Table B-3 presents similar data collected by ZeInik and Kantner (1985) from probability samples of young women residing in metropolitan areas of the United States in 1971, 1976, and 1979. Table B-4 (adapted from work reported by Klassen and colleagues in this volume) provides a parallel tabulation from the 1970 Kinsey Institute survey broken down by birth cohort. Figures B-1 and B-2 plot the data from these tables.2 Table B-5 presents a tabulation of the number of sexual partners reported by never-married young women in the 1979 ZeInik and Kantner survey. Table B-6 compares measurements of heterosexual activity for the 1944-1949 birth cohort that were made in the 1982 NSFG and in the 1970 Kinsey Institute survey. Tables B-7 and B-8 elaborate data reported by Fay and col- leagues (in press). Table B-7 cross-tabulates the homosexual ex- perience of ever-married men (including number of mate partners) by their premarital heterosexual experience. As noted in the com- mentary by Pay and coworkers (in press), although these data show substantial heterogeneity of same-gender and across-gencler sexual contacts, the data are quite sparse, and the missing data problems are severe. Table B-S provides a parallel tabulation for never-married men; however, owing to the paucity of available data (N = 135 never- married men), the table does not break down the men's same-gender sexual experience by number of same-gender partners.
