Coal Research and Development: to Support National Energy Policy
Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements inthe United States for at least the next several decades, and it is imperative that policy makers are provided with accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reservesthat will be available to fulfill these energy needs. It is also importantthat we extract our coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support forcoal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the activeparticipation of the states and the industrial sector, is a critical elementfor each of these requirements.
