Day 2 Welcome and Introduction M.R.C. Greenwood University of Hawaii Dr. Greenwood welcomed the participants back for the second day of the symposium and introduced Hawaii’s Senator Daniel Akaka. She said that he had been an extraordinary senator for Hawaii, especially in his leadership of the Committee on Veteran’s Affairs. She noted further that the Senator is the first native Hawaiian and the first person of Chinese-American descent to serve in the U.S. Senate. 89
