Treatment Descriptions 61 Landscaping can be a significant safety hazard when placed within the clear zone or when it obstructs sight distance for drivers pulling out into the roadway. However, when implemented appropriately, it can provide a safety benefit. A before-and-after study conducted by TTI implemented landscape improvements to 10 Texas Department of Transportation projects. After the landscaping was in place for three years, the mean crash rate per 1 million vehicle miles traveled decreased approximately 20% while the pedestrian crash rate was reduced by 40%. (Mok et al., 2006) 4.14 Summary There are a variety of treatments and potential applications that should be customized for each unique intersection need.
