PREFACE
Founded in 1952, the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR) is
a component of the Division of Biological Sciences, Assembly of Life Sci-
ences, National Research Council. ILAR serves as a coordinating agency
to disseminate information, establish guidelines for humane care and use
of animals, survey existing and required resources, promote education,
hold conferences, and generally to upgrade laboratory animal resources.
As a service to the scientific community, the staff of ILAR compiles
data on sources of animals and biologic materials. Animals for Research -
A Directory of Sources (Tenth Edition) is a compilation of information
provided from 186 suppliers of a wide variety of animals. It is designed
to facilitate locating and procuring animals for research use.
This version of Animals for Research represents a significant depar-
ture from previous editions. Strain and stock histories have been omit-
ted purposely, thus freeing space for information that has proven more
immediately relevant to purchasing representatives and investigators, in-
cluding: surgical modifications available; immunizations given routinely;
and seasonal availability of various wild-caught animals. If needed, the
historical information can be obtained directly from the supplier or from
pertinent literature (see, for example, Festing and Staats, 1973; Staats,
1976; Altman and Katz, 1979).
Other changes, intended to make the book easier to use, include cat-
egorization of cats and dogs as to colony bred or random source and list-
ing of less commonly used vertebrates by common name, with a cross-index
by scientific name. Opinions and comments on the format of this Directory
would be appreciated and may be directed to:

It is anticipated that this material will be updated periodically,
between editions, through publication of supplements, the availability
of which will be announced in the Institute's quarterly journal, the
ILAR News.

In assembling data for this Directory, companies were requested to
provide accurate identification and descriptions of their available ani-
mal stocks. To ensure uniform listing, all suppliers were urged to com-
ply with the specific terms and definitions used in this Directory. Al-
though ILAR has made every effort to be complete and accurate, we cannot
vouch for the identifying or descriptive terminology used, nor do we
endorse any breeder, supplier, importer, or collector. All inquiries
concerning cost or additional details on available animals should be dir-
ected to the companies listed herein.
This volume was compiled and edited by Dorothy D. Greenhouse and
Andrea Lynn Cohen with secretarial assistance from Joan L. Delli Carpini.
Assistance also was given by other members of the ILAR staff. Gratitude
is due to Samuel M. Poiley, National Cancer Institute, retired; Carl T.
Hansen, National Institutes of Health; Joan Staats, The Jackson Labora-
tory; and Ronald Crombie, Smithsonian Institution for their contributions.
Thanks also go to the ILAR Committee on Animal Models and Genetic Stocks
for their help and advice.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
Definitions and explanations of the terms used in this listing are given
below. These definitions were used by those completing questionnaires to
supply information for this compilation; a few terms are defined for use
specifically in Animals for Research - A D,rectory of Sources. Where
possible, definitions conform*to those used by the International Comm; ttee
on Laboratory Animals (ICLA). Terminology pertaining to gnotobiotic
technology conforms to definitions cited by the ILAR Subcommittee on
Standards for Gnotobiotes.'
BARRIER REARED (BR) or SPECIFIC-PATHOGEN FREE (SPF) ANIMAL - An animal
with defined flora maintained in an open-room barrier.
CLOSED COLONY - An animal population that is maintained without the
introduction of animals from other sources.
CONVENTIONAL (C) ANIMAL' - An animal with an uncontrolled flora, reared
under open animal room conditions in association with other animals
of the same type.
CROSSBREED - The result of a mating between two purebred animals.
DEFINED FLORA (DF) ANIMAL' - A gnotobiote maintained under isolator con-
ditions in intentional association with one or more known types
of microorganisms.
GERMFREE ANIMAL (GF) [axenic animal]' - A gnotobiote that is free from
all demonstrable associated forms of life, including bacteria,
viruses, fungi, protozoa, and other saprophytic or parasitic forms.
Since criteria for establishing "germfreeness" depend on currently-
available diagnostic tests, animals now designated as germfree may
possibly in the future be found to harbor one or more viable agents.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS - cont.
GNOTOBIOTE (GN) [gnotobiotic animal]'! - One of an animal stock or strain
derived by aseptic cesarean section or sterile hatching of eggs that
is reared and continuously maintained with germfree techniques under
isolator conditions and in which the composition of any associated
fauna and flora, if present, is fully defined by accepted current
methodology.
*
HYBRID - The immediate product of either 1) an interspecies cross, or
2) a cross between two inbred strains. When listed in this Direc-
tory, hybrid crosses are shown with the female parent first.
INBRED STRAIN - A strain shall be regarded as inbred when it has been
mated brother x sister (hereinafter called b x s) for 20 or more
consecutive generations. Parent x offspring (p x o) mating may be
substituted for b x s matings. When consecutive p x o matings are
used, the mating must always be to the most recent generation
parent.
LINEBRED - Animals derived by a mating system where some relationship is
deliberately maintained to one common ancestor.
*
MATING SYSTEM - Any plan for propagating animals.
MIXED BREED - A stock that is a mixture of two or more pure breeds, with
the precise mixture not always known; herein applied mainly to dogs,
domestic farm mammals, and domestic fowl.
MUTANT - An animal that has heritable characteristics that deviate from
the norm.
OUTBRED STOCK - A stock derived by the deliberate mating of unrelated
animals.
PARTIALLY INBRED - A group of animals that has been maintained by b x s
or p x o matings, but not yet up to 20 generations.
VARIOUS BREEDS - A listing indicating that several breeds are available
from a particular source, but that these have not been identified
individually by name.
