Preface In the 26 years since the publication of Rabies and its Control, there has been important progress in our understanding of the disease and the virus. More effective vaccines are now available, the epidemiologic patterns of the disease have become clearer, and diagnostic techniques are more sure. This report deals with the pathogenesis of the disease, with virus- wildlife interactions, and with vaccines and regulatory aspects. In preparing it, the subcommittee has had the benefit of views from the following consultants representing a variety of disciplines and back- grounds: Donald Balser, Albert L. Brown, H. R. Fischman, John M. Hejl, George L. Humphrey, Edward Phillips, Robert E. Shope, and W. G. Winkler. Hi
