Biographical Sketches
J EFFREY S. ARPA N is Professor of International Business in
the College of Business Administration at the University of South
Carolina. Dr. Arpan holds a B.A. in economics and a Ph.D. in
business administration from Indiana University. He is a member
of a number of professional organizations including the Academy
of International Business (Vie - President in 1977-79), the
American Accounting Association, and the Assembly of American
Collegiate Schools of Business. Dr. Arpan serves on the editorial
boards of several journals and is the author of several books and
articles.
MARY E. BARRY is Assistant Professor at Auburn Univeristy
in the School of Home Economics and the Consumer Affairs
Department. She holds a B.S. in economics from St. Joseph
College, an M.S. in retailing from New York University, and an
Ed.D. in vocational education from Temple University. Dr. Barry
has taught at Pennsylvania State University and was a buyer for G.
Fox & Co. She is a member of a number of professional societies
including the National Economists Club, the American Collegiate
Retailing Association, and the Alabama World Trade Association
and was a member of the U.S. Department of Labor, Committee
on Productivity-Foreign Labor of the Business Research Advisory
Council.
J. AMES R. BERCAW is Manager of Product Services and
Technology in the Textile Fibers Department of E. I. DuPont de
Nemours & Co. Dr. Bercaw received his undergraduate degree
from William Jewell College and a Ph.~. in physical-organic
chemistry from Ohio State University. Having joined DuPont in
1954 as a research chemist, Dr. Bercaw has held positions of
increasing responsibility in a number of DuPont plants and
locations. He is an active member of the Man-Made Fiber s
Producers' Association, the U.S. Department of Commerce

Industry Sector Advisory Committee on Textiles and Apparel, and
serves as an industry advisor to the Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative.
LAURENCE A. CHRISTIANSEN, JR. is Editor-in-Chief of
Textile World, Textile Week, and Textile Products and Processes
at McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. Mr. Christiansen holds a B.S. in
journalism from New York University and began his career at
McGraw-Hillas production assistant on Petroleum Week. He is a
member of several professional organizations including the
American Association of Textile Technology, the American
Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, and Delta Sigma
and has received the American Business Jesse Neal Award and its
Certificate of Merit.
W. DENNEY FREESTON is Associate Dean of the School of
Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds B.S., M.S.,
and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Princeton
University. Before joining Georgia Tech, Dr. Freeston was
employed at Fabric Research Laboratories, Inc. where he worked
as a senior research associate, the applied mechanics assistant
director, and the applied mechanics associate director. His major
research interests have been in the mechanics of fibrous struc-
tures, crack propagation in textiles, and fiber reinforced
composites.
EDWARD F. JOHNSON is Director of The Johnson Redbook
Service, Prescott, Ball & Turben. Before founding the service in
the early 1960s, Mr. Johnson worked in Venezuela with J. G. White
Construction Company and for George S. Armstrong, Management
Construction Engineers. Mr. Johnson holds an M.E. from Cornell
University and is a member of a number of professional societies
including the New York Analysts Society, the Apparel and Textile
Analysts Group, and the Retail Analysts Group.
STIG A. KRY is Chairman of the Board of Kurt Salmon
Associates (KSA), a management consulting firm founded in 1935.
Before joining KSA in 1958 to work on production engineering
projects, Mr.Kry held positions in a number of apparel companies
both in the United States and Sweden. ~ addition to his corporate
duties, Mr. Kry has overall responsibility for KSA's International
Division and is a member of the U.S. delegation to the Inter-
national Apparel Federation.
R OBERT MALPAS is Group Managing Director of British
Petroleum (B.P.) Corporation, U.K. Before joining B.P. in 1983,

Air. Malpas was the President and Chief Operating Officer of
Halcon International, Inc. Earlier he had served as Executive
Director of Imperial Chemical Industries. Mr. Malpas holds a
B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from King's College, University of
Durham, and is the recipient of a number of honors including the
Order of Civil Merit awarded by the Spanish Government and the
Commander of the British Empire. He is also a member of several
Professional associations including The Royal Institute of
International Affairs, Fellow of the British Institute of
Management, and Fellow of Engineering in the Council of
Engineering.
RICHARD STEELE recently retired as Executive Vices
President of Celanese Fibers International Company. Dr. Steele
holds a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton
University. Before joining Celanese in 1965, he was the head of
the textile research and product development laboratory at Rohm
and Hass Company. Dr. Steele has been active in a number of
professional groups and was Chairman of the Board of trustees of
the Textile Research Institute. He has published over 40 papers
and has received a number of honors including the Olney Medal
from the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists
and the Harold DeWitt Smith Award from the American Society
for Testing and Materials.
L AZARE TEPER is the Director of Special Projects in the
Office of the President, International Ladies' Garment Workers'
Union (ILGWU). Dr. Teper completed his undergraduate work at
the Universite de Paris and received an A.M. and Ph.D. from Johns
Hopkins. Most of Dr. Teper's professional career has been spent at
the ILGWU. He served for a number of years as director-at-large
of the National Bureau for Economic Research, has worked on
committees of the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S.
Department of Labor Joint Labor Advisory Council, as a member
of the committee on national planning of the National Planning
Association, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the
National Bureau of Economic Research. Dr. Teper is a member of
a number of professional societies and is an elected Fellow of the
American Statistical Association and of the American Association
for the Advancement of Sciences, as well as the author of two
books and several professional journal articles.
F RA N K X. WERBER is Vic - President of Research and
Development at J. P. Stevens & Co., Inc. He earned a B.S. at
Queens College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the

university of Illinois. Before joining 3. P. Stevens, Dr. Werber
worked at B. F. Goodrich and was Vic - President of Research in
the Central Research Division of W. R. Grace dc Co. Dr. Werber
holds over 25 U.S. patents in the field of plastics and organic
chemical research and has been active in the American Textile
Manufacturers' Institute, the Textile Research Institute, and the
Industrial Research Institute.
