1977 Amendment to the
Safe Drinking Water Act
Appendix A in the first volume of the Drinking Water and Health series
(National Research Council, 1977, p. 905) is entitled Legislation and
Terms of Reference of the Study. It describes the purpose of the legisla-
tion, gives an abridged summary of it, explains why it was needed, and
describes what subjects are to be addressed in the National Academy of
Sciences study mandated by the Safe Dnnking Water Act of 1974 (PL 93-
523~.
Section 1412(e)~2) of the 1974 act called for results of the National Acad-
emy of Sciences study to be reported to Congress no later than 2 years after
the date of enactment of the title. The Safe Drinking Water Amendments
of 1977 authorized continuation of the agreement with the National Acad-
emy of Sciences to rense the study "reflecting new information which has
become available since the most recent previous report [and which] shall
be reported to Congress each two years thereafter."
