APPENDIX C
GENERAL TABLE OF COMMON CONVERSIONS

Appendix C - General Table of Common Conversions

In this report, units have been converted from English to metric where practical. Below is a general table of common conversions. With this conversion, some values may appear more precise than in the original document; for example, "less than 6 inches of rainfall" may now be written as "less than 15.2 cm of rainfall." One significant figure now appears as three. There is no easy remedy for this other than alerting the reader.

Linear Measure (Length)

1 centimeter (cm) = 0.3937 in

1 inch (in) = 2.540 cm

1 foot (ft) = 30.48 cm = 0.3048 m

1 mile(mi) = 1609m = 1.609 km

1 meter (m) = 39.37 in = 3.281 ft

1 kilometer (km) = 0.6214 mi

Measure of Volume

1 cubic cm = 0.0610 in3

1 cubic in = 16.39 cm3

1 cubic ft = 28,317 cm3 = 2.8×10-2 m3

1 cubic m = 61,023 in3 = 35.32 ft3

1 acre-ft = 43,560 ft3 = 1233 m3

1 liter (l) = 1,000 cm3 = 0.001 m3

1 liter = 1.08 qt = 10.27 gal

1 gallon (Gal) = 3.71 = 3.7×10-3 m3

Volumetric Flow Rates

1 ft3/Sec = 2.832×10-2 m3/Sec

1 m3/Sec = 35.32 ft3/sec

Area Measure

1 sq cm = 0.155 in2

1 sq in = 6.452 cm2

1 sq ft = 929 cm2 = .093 m2

1 sq m = 1550 in2 = 10.76 ft2

1 hectare = 2.47 acres

1 acre = 43,560 ft2

1 acre = 0.4047 hectare = 4.047×103 km2

1 sq km = 0.386 mi2

1 sq mi = 258.888 m2 = 2.59 km2

Weight

1 pound (lb) = 454 gm = 0.454 kg

1 kilogram = 2.20 lb

Unit Weight

1 lb/ft3 = 16 kg/m3

1 kg/m3 = .06242 lb/ft3

1000 kg/m3 = 1 gr/cm3

1 gr/cm3 = 0.036 lb/in3 = 62.4 lb/ft3
