Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

APPENDIX A Risk Factors Associated with Low Birthweight The following chart lists the major risk factors for low birth- weight and notes (with an "x. ~ whether an individual factor has been associated with intrauter ine growth retardation (IUGR), preterm delivery (PTD) or both; or whether it has been linked only to low birthweight, not further specified (LBW). In some instances, a factor has been linked to all three outcome measures; in others, the association is with only one or two. For some of these factors, the committee was able to locate r elative and attr ibutable r isk values; * these appear on the char t under the headings RR and AR, respectively. In general, relative risk values were recorded only if at least one value of 1.8 or greater was found in the articles reviewed, although several values less than 1.8 that are drawn from Chapter 3 are noted on the chart. Attributable risks were recorded whenever a number was located. The control variables used by var. ious studies in computing the relative and attr ibutable r isks are not listed ; nor, in most instances , are the character istics of the populations from which the data were gathered. Documentation justifying the presence of a given factor on the chart is drawn either from the articles providing the RR or AR values, or from the data presented in Chapters 2 and 3. For those factors that have no RR or AR values on the chart and that are not discussed in Chapters 2 or 3, a reference Is provided. Reference numbers appear in parentheses, corresponding to the citations following the chart. Following the references and notes to the appendix is a list of several additional articles that discuss the risk factors associated with preterm delivery, IUGR, or both. *Chapter 1 contains a definition of relative risk and attributable risk. 241

Despite recent declines in infant mortality, the rates of low birthweight deliveries in the United States continue to be high. Part I of this volume defines the significance of the problems, presents current data on risk factors and etiology, and reviews recent state and national trends in the incidence of low birthweight among various groups. Part II describes the preventive approaches found most desirable and considers their costs. Research needs are discussed throughout the volume.
