APPENDIX
CCharacteristics of Bench-Mark Streams
Table C.1 and Figure C.1 give the locations of the
U.S. Geological Survey Bench-Mark streams analyzed in
Chapter 7. The numbering system used for these basins
follows that in Table C.2, which contains data on the
chemical composition of these streams, including
estimates of time trends in concentrations of common ions
using the seasonal Kendall test.
In Table C.2, slopes of trends significant at the 0.1
level are denoted by an asterisk. Slopes of trends
significant at the 0.01 level are denoted by a double
asterisk. ID denotes insufficient data for estimating
trends. N is the number of samples measured. Y/D is the
ratio of basin sulfate yield to sulfate deposition.
Sulfate output from the Bench-Mark watersheds was
estimated as the product of discharge-weighted mean
sulfate concentrations and mean basin runoff for the
2-year period from 1980 and 1981. Sulfate deposition at
each basin was estimated by linear interpolation of
wet-only sulfate deposition data from the National Acid
Deposition Program (NADP) for 1980 and 1981.
Table C.3 (which begins on page 464) contains
descriptions of 16 basins of the U.S. Geological Survey
Bench-Mark streams with alkalinities lower than 500
peq/L.
