As illustrated above, many agencies, organizations, and individuals work on some facet of injury prevention. However, the state and community response is often hampered by federal and state funding constraints and a lack of awareness of injury prevention measures. The committee has identified five areas that, if successfully addressed, could optimize proven strategies for prevention: (1) strengthening the public health infrastructure; (2) building and encouraging collaboration and coalitions of state and local safety agencies and organizations; (3) improving training and technical assistance; (4) improving the translation of research findings into practice; and (5) increasing public awareness and advocacy.
