1.0 SURVEY INSTRUMENT
A national survey of current agency practices was conducted to examine some of the areas
where transportation and tourism interface. The following questionnaire was distributed to 53
AASHTO-member transportation deparDnents. A second version, not provided in this report, was
distributed to the 53 state travel offices in corresponding states. Essentially, the two questionnaires
are the same, with only minor wording differences.

Traveler information services" refers to the wide range of communication devices that could be
used to guide travelers and camera through the transportation network to tounsm sites. These
services could range from terminal information displays/reception centers, road signing, welcome
centers, historic markers, scenic overlooks, promotional brochures, and dedicated radio channels
to broadcast status reports on weather and other tounst-related conditions (e.g., ski, foliage, and
special events).
