The symposium is designed to explore uses of national survey data on food consumption. Since this symposium is a part of a study of both the USDA's Nationwide Food Consumption Surveys (NFCS) -- the Household Food Use and Individual Dietary Intake components -- and also the Dietary Component of the DENS' National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-DC), - opportunities for enhancing compatibility and comparability between the surveys are clearly a facet of this symposium. PURPOSES: - To review information-gathering efforts of the June 6-8 workshop of the Coordinating Committee on Evaluation of Food Consumption Surveys; - - - - To expand these information-gathering efforts, in particular by identifying additional uses of ant needs for data and data release products from national surveys on food consumption; To identify the Scientific concerns that impact on current and future survey methodologies, data reporting, ant survey uses; To identify modifications of survey design and/or data reporting that meet these identified uses; and To assess the potential impact of suggested survey modifications. A special agenda feature sets aside some specific time periods to provide members of the audience with the opportunity to comment on their uses of the data. The Committee has suggested that those who desire to provide information should plan on In addition to oral comments during _ ~ _ , the audience participation sections of the symposium, the Committee welcomes more extensive written comments from audience participants. The Committee also welcomes written comments from those data users who cannot attend the symposium. In addressing uses of national survey data on food consumption, the following points may be useful as starting points for comments: user identification; your type of use (e.g., industrial user in market research; food and nutrition communicator, etc.~; specific examples of current use (e.g., assessment of current calcium intake by age and gender; food purchase comparisons with socioeconomic categories, etch; purposes for which you use the data (e.g., assessing dietary adequacy, food safety assessments, trend assessments, etc.~; brief (em. 3 minute) oral comments. Opportunities identified for wider use and modifications needed; how data, survey reports or other data release products can be changed to bring about wider use; (e.g., survey sampling changes: in absolute numbers, sub-group representations, geographic regions, age-sex groupings, income levels, target sub-groups; survey design changes: continuing vs. periodic/at what frequency; cross-sectional vs. longitudinal; changes in reporting of food/nutrient intake: number of days of intake, specificity of food data, detailed vs. aggregate reporting of foods, changes in food/nutrient data bases used to calculate intake estimates, etc.~; and implications of these suggested modifications (e.g., trade-offs involved; data and information that could be lost as well as that which would be gained, etch.
