MISSION AND FOCUS OF RESEARCH: As a broad-based designer and manufacturer of high-technology products, United Technologies has a variety of products and research capabilities. Subsidiaries of the corporation include Otis Elevator, the world's largest elevator manufacturer, and Carrier Corporation, worldwide leading air-conditioner manufacturer. The United Technologies Research Center conducts basic and applied research across a broad spectrum of advanced technologies employing about 1,100 technical and support personnel. The Research Center performs near-, medium-, and long-term R&D programs in photonics (integrated optics, fiber-optics, lasers, electro-optics, nonlinear optics, acousto-optics); electronics (compound semiconductor materials and devices, microelectronic sensors, hybrid circuits, signal processing, microwave devices); and computer science (artificial intelligence, computer architectures, software), which can have application to integrated security systems, special alarm and detection systems, communications systems, and the detection and analysis of electromagnetic emissions.
