JILA was established in 1962 by an agreement between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (at that time, the National Bureau of Standards) and the University of Colorado. Together NIST and the University operated JILA, located on the main University campus in Boulder, as a center for advanced research and teaching. JILA’s staff directed their activities at developing new measurement methods and standards, helping to improve industrial competitiveness, and contributing to technological education of students. The work of NIST and University scientists encompasses atomic and molecular interactions, spectroscopy and line broadening, chemical physics, optical and laser physics, nonlinear optics and optical communications, precision measurement, gravitational physics, geophysical measurement techniques, materials processing and semiconductor fabrication, nanometrology, stellar atmospheres and radiative transfer, and galactic astronomy. The Subpanel for JILA is charged with reporting its findings on the health and direction of JILA to both NIST and the University of Colorado.
