The mission of the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) is to stimulate U.S. economic growth and industrial competitiveness through technical leadership and collaborative research in critical infrastructure technologies to promote better development and use of information technology. ITL carries out this mission by working with industry, research and government organizations to develop and demonstrate tests, test methods, reference data, proof of concept implementations and other infrastructural technologies that are needed by U.S. industry to produce usable, scalable, interoperable, and secure information technology systems.

ITL’s specific program activities include: research, technical collaboration and support to NIST activities and to U.S. industry in mathematical and computational sciences and in statistical methods; tests, quality assurance techniques, tools, models, and reference data for emerging network technologies; measurement methods and techniques for efficient access to and exchange of complex, multimedia information; techniques and methods for protecting the integrity, confidentiality, reliability, and availability of information resources; research, development and evaluation of measurement methods for high performance computing and communications systems; software testing tools and methods to improve quality of software; and information technology resources, supporting infrastructure, and services to NIST staff, collaborators and clients in conducting scientific, engineering and administration applications.
