Statement of Task

The steering committee convened by the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board will design, organize, and conduct a workshop aimed at discussing DGPS plans and objectives and developing options for improving communication and coordination among the scientific DGPS users in the Earth and atmospheric sciences and network operators. Such communication and coordination should include considerations of specification and standardization of equipment, testing, documentation, error reduction, real-time data communications, analysis software development, and data management and archiving. The steering committee will produce proceedings in a nine-month framework,

The committee will meet twice to develop the workshop program and oversee the preparation of the proceedings of the workshop. The staff officer will work with the steering committee and assist with the preparation of the proceedings. Approximately 30 individuals will be invited to participate in the three-day workshop.

The workshop agenda might include: (1) descriptions of various DGPS networks, their purpose, and the type and format of data they provide; (2) descriptions of various DGPS scientific applications and their requirements; (3) discussion of potential modifications required to maximize the usefulness of DGPS data to scientific applications; (4) discussion of commonalities between the requirements of various scientific applications; (5) discussion of options for improving coordination and communication among the scientific DGPS users and network operators; (6) discussion of benefits and costs associated with improved coordination and communication.
