Next Steps
The development of the network of pediatricians and other health professionals involved in the workshop is an important step in improving the health and welfare of children in the republics of the former Yugoslavia.
-
Participants expressed a strong interest in continuing their discussions and in meeting again in the near future to examine progress in the areas of concern described in this report, including:
-
Epidemiology and development of methods for standardized data collection;
-
Definition of needs for the restoration of child health;
-
Programs to support child mental health;
-
Roles of pediatricians and children's doctors in the protection of children under difficult circumstances; and
-
Redevelopment of professional connections with European and international pediatric societies.
-
An interim meeting is planned for the fall of 1994, and an anniversary meeting is planned in the spring of 1995.
-
The development of pediatric societies through the region would be an important step toward the professional organization of physicians in these regions, especially if these societies are able to attain membership in the International Pediatric Association and the Union of National European Pediatric Societies and Associations. Slovenia, Croatia, and Macedonia already have functioning pediatric societies. Societies are currently being formed in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia.
-
Individual members of the organizing committee plan to explore ways to implement appropriate exchange programs, including assistance with academic support such as books and journals and travel support for international meetings in both Europe and the United States.
-
The workshop participants will also seek to promote awareness of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child in children 's hospitals, pediatric departments, and pediatric clinics.
The role of the international pediatric community as advocates for the health and rights of all children, with particular emphasis on the protection of children in difficult circumstances, is one that will require renewed commitment and diligence. The report of the workshop on the effects of war on the children of the former Yugoslavia is an important step in exercising this role.
