BULLETIN OF THE NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCII November, 1932 SUMMARY INFORMATION ON THE STATE GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS AND THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - Number 88 Compiled under the direction of the National Research Council Committee on State Geological Survey s1 ~ Committee members: M. M. Leighton, Chairman; E. F. Bean, H. A. Buehler Arthur Keith, Henry B. Pummel, Waldemar Lindgren. PUBI,ISHED BY THE NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES WASHINGTON, D. C. 1932

pREFAaE This report has been prepared to meet. a wide need for information on the present state geological surveys of the country and of the United States Geological Survey. The only report now available is Bulletin 465 of the United States Geological Survey, which was published in 1911- twenty-one years ago. The term, state geological surveys, is herein used to include bureaus of economic geology, bureaus of mines, natural history surveys, and so forth, whose investigations include the field of geology. The majority of the states have an organization of some kind to carry on investigations into the geology and mineral resources within their domain. In those cases where no special organization exists, an attempt is made to state how these functions are carried on, if at all. Rhode Island is the only state which has not responded to inquiries. The Committee on State Geological Surveys of the Division of Ge- ology and Geography of the National :Research Council outlined the scope of this bulletin in a questionnaire which was sent to all of the geological surveys and mining bureaus. The information contained herein is basted on the data furnished-revised and corrected by each organiza.- tion, in March, 193.2. This has entailed much correspondence, but the Committee appreciates the splendid cooperation given to promote a.~- curacy and to avoid unnecessary detail. To Miss Enid Townley, Assistant to the Chairman of the Committee, is due the warm thanks of the Committee for her important part in the final compilation and revision. 31. M. LEIGHTON, Chairman.
