APPENDIX E Biotechnology Survey Questionnaire and Summary of Responses Dear Colleague: The Congress has asked the National Academy of Science (NAS) to determine the nation's need for research personnel in the biomedical and behavioral fields. As a member of the NAS' Committee on National Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Research Personnel, ~ am particularly concerned that there be an adequate number of people trained in areas of the new biotechnology. - In collaboration with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), ~ am writing to ask your assistance in collecting some information on this issue. You could help us greatly in our efforts to pet a profile of current employment opportunities and a sense of future demand in biotechnology and redated industries by responding to the three questions on the attached page. To be useful in our report to the Congress, we need your answers as soon as possible. The tabulated data from the questionnaire will be published. Only ASM and the NAS Committee will have access to the individual responses. If you have additional comments or suggestions that you think would assist us, please include them with your response. ~ self-addressed envelope is enclosed. also, if you have any questions concerning the questionnaire, don't hesitate to call me at (607) 256-2364. With thanks for your help. Enc. Yours sincerely, Robert Barker, Ph.D. Provost Cornel ~ University 238
