Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

ERRATA A Stronger Cancer Centers Program 0 page 2, paragraph 3, and page 21, paragraph 1: The NCI funds "clinical cooperative groups," not "cooperative oncology groups." o Grant awards have not always been reduced by exactly 15 percent from recommended levels since 1982. Therefore, in the first sentence on page 14, the phrase "NCI tried to stretch the funding by awarding only 85 percent of the individual grant amounts recommended through the peer-review process" should be replaced with the phrase ''NCI tried to stretch the funding by awarding less than the full amount of support recommended by the peer-review process." also, on page 15, third paragraph, last sentence, the phrase "as they have been in recent years" should be deleted. O page 14, second sentence: The sentence should be replaced with 'I Currently, there are 59 centers, not including 2 centers that failed to be renewed but whose grants are still active." 0 page 14, last paragraph: NCI has not finally decided on its funding policy for centers in fiscal year 1990. Therefore, it would be more appropriate to say "another five or so centers could be lost," rather than would be lost. This change should also be made on page 16, first full paragraph, second sentence. O page 19, third full paragraph: The reference to the "National Cancer Plan" should be deleted, because it is no longer legislatively mandated. The NCI uses other planning procedures and documents, some of which are noted in the same sentence. O page 21, footnote: The last sentence of the footnote should read: "Since 1987, funds have not been appropriated by Congress for the program." o page 22, footnote: The footnote should read: "An ad hoc consultant group of center directors has been formed to meet with NCI officials responsible for the cancer centers program." 0 page 6, Figure 5: The numerical notation below the label "Alterations and Renovations" should read: "0.2 percent." 0 page 28, first full paragraph, last sentence: The phrase "... training grants for clinical trials research cooperative agreements'' should read: "... training grants, cooperative agreements for clinical trials research, ...." NOTE: Because of time constraints on the conduct of the study, these final technical corrections and editorial changes could not be made before the report was printed.
