Basic Research Opportunities in Earth Science
supports geology and geophysics research (e.g., structure, tectonics, volcanism, sedimentary processes, seawater or ocean rock geochemistry) on the ocean basins and margins, as well as the Great Lakes. It also covers interactions of continental and marine geologic processes. Important components of the MG&G program include (1) the Ridge Inter-Disciplinary Global Experiments, physical, chemical, and biological interactions between the midocean ridge volcanic system and the ocean environment, and (2) MARGINS (Continental Margins Research) (see Box A.2 ). Finally, the Coastal Ocean Processes Program supports research on the physical and meteorological processes that affect biological productivity, sedimentary processes, and chemical transformations in the coastal ocean system.
