APPENDIX A
Statement of Task
The Workshop Steering Committee will participate in the development of long-term global aeronautics scenarios to help guide the strategic planning process for the NASA Office of Aeronautics. These scenarios will span the breadth of aeronautics, including civil aviation, military aviation, and access to space. In addition, the scenarios will consider other critical factors that will impact the future of aeronautics, including information and communications systems, national and global transportation systems, and air traffic management systems, as well as economic, social, and policy factors. These scenarios will focus on the long-term, which is defined as 15 to 25 years or beyond the next-generation systems.
The scenarios will draw on existing data and studies, including research in this area prepared under NASA auspices by SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation). Scenarios based on revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, technologies will be considered. The workshop will further refine and develop the scenarios by reviewing the key driving forces in aeronautics and will strive to reach consensus regarding the key issues, the most likely scenarios, and the general role that NASA should play in planning for the future.
