Experiments with Motion.
Robert Gardner. Getting Started in Science series. Springfield, N.J.: Enslow, 1995.
Recommended grade level:
6-8.
In Experiments with Motion, 1 of 4 books in the series Getting Started in Science, about 50 simple experiments help students investigate Newton's laws of motion, speed, gravity, acceleration, and friction. Among the activities, students see what effect mass has on a toy truck's acceleration, they make and experiment with a model parachute, and they compare the acceleration of falling objects of different masses. They also investigate inelastic and elastic collisions by experimenting with a homemade "rolling-sphere" toy. The activities involve materials such as bicycles, toy cars and trucks, wagons, marbles, modeling clay, and balloons.
Experiments with Motion was written for students. They can do most of the activities without supervision, although several may require adult supervision because of the materials. The activities are largely narrative in form. Each contains questions to help guide students' inquiry. Some experiments are preceded by an explanation of a scientific principle.
