Two of them, reprinted in Sections 4.1 and 4.4, provide guidance on the Space Station and Shuttle-Mir programs developed jointly by the Board's Committee on Microgravity Research and Committee on Space Biology and Medicine. Section 4.2 presents an assessment of two prospective programs in space infrared astronomy, the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
