Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.
PART I I REPORTS OF THE WORKING GROUPS As described in Part I of the report of the Continental Margins Workshop Committee, each of the six working groups was charged to define the single most important scientific objective within its focus, to determine needed studies, and to describe strategies for achieving its stated goals. With these general charges as its guide, each working group was free to approach its task with appropriate autonomy, refining or refocusing its objectives as it proceeded. The result is a difference in presentation from report to report without any attempt having been made by the workshop committee to impose consistency Of presentation for its own sake. The reader will find, however, that the findings set forth here and in Part I are congruent, although they may be worded differently or presented in different sequences.
