Closing Remarks By Dr. R. M. Bethke, General Chairman While great progress has been made in all phases of beef production, the facts are that much thought and research still need to be instigated. For example, I think we need studies that will measure what the consumer wants and is willing to pay for beef. Second: In order to' give the consumer what he wants, studies relating to control of quality in the production and market- ing of beef and/or quality identification in the sorting of beef at the central points is needed. Third: To supply the 'increasing popu- lation with the quality of beef wanted, attention needs to be given to the pro- duction of quality beef on a per-acre, per- unit of feed, per-breeding unit, and per- man hour basis. This, of course, involves genetics, nutrition, and management. Fourth: Improvement is needed in our marketing system, so the producer can produce the beef we want, the amount we want, where we want it, and when we want it. All of these call for greater pre- cision techniques in factors which affect or influence the quality of the beef for to- morrow. The planning committee of the Na- tional Academy of SciencesâNational Re- search Council and Agricultural Research Institute will review comments made at this conference and consider what is needed as far as the future is concerned. And they propose to come up with some recommendations which will be incorpo- rated into the published proceedings of this conference. 128
