The AGRICULTURAL BOARD, a part of the Division of Biology and Agriculture of the National Academy of SciencesâNational Re- search Council, studies and reports on scientific problems of agri- culture in relation to the national economy. Financial support for the meetings and publications of the Board is derived primarily from the Agricultural Research Institute, which is an organization com- posed of representatives of industry, trade organizations, academic institutions, and governmental agencies concerned with agriculture. Members of the Agricultural Board and of its committees serve with- out compensation beyond their actual expenses. Funds for the work of the Agricultural Board are received and administered by the Academy. The NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES-NATIONAL RE- SEARCH COUNCILâis a private, nonprofit organization of scientists, dedicated to the furtherance of science and to its use for the general welfare. The Academy itself was established in 1863 by the terms of a Congressional charter under which it is empowered to provide for all activities appropriate to academies of science and is required to act as an adviser to the Federal Government in scientific matters. The National Research Council was established by the Academy in 1916, at the request of the President of the United States, to enable scientists generally to associate their efforts with those of the limited member- ship of the Academy. With funds contributed from both public and private sources, the Academy and its Research Council work to stimu- late research and its applications, to survey the broad possibilities of science, to promote effective utilization of the scientic and technical resources of the country, to serve the Government, and to further the general interests of science.
