Flaccid muscles. 55 to 60 years of age, of medium height. External examination revealed two old triangular-shaped scars in the epigastric and dorsal regions. Opening of the abdomen revealed a pale-coloured liver, of barely normal size. Spleen normal. All digestive organs normal. Upon examination of the abdominal cavity, there were noticed two masses of a volume of two to three kilos each, the surface of which was dotted with cysts of various sizes. These masses corresponded to the kidneys. Incision of these masses revealed destruction of the renal parenchyma of each side. Everything had turned into a large mass covered with cysts. There was a discharge of serous haematic fluid from the cysts. Histopathological examination indicated that the kidneys had been attacked by multiple bilateral cysts accompanied by the suppurative infection. Cause of death Chronic renal insufficiency resulting from multiple bilateral cysts, the seat of suppurative pyelonephritis.
