CLOSING NOTES

Both sides agree that the joint workshop successfully met its objectives and suggest that standing committees be established to provide continuity for this cooperative effort. It is also desirable that delegations from both countries meet on an annual basis, alternating the places for the meeting, to examine the progress of the cooperative effort and recommend improvements.

It should be noted that this memorandum of discussion, co-signed by the leaders of both delegations, is preliminary. The document will be reviewed and revised as necessary by the NAS and ASUSSR before it is finalized for publication. Successful execution in carrying out joint studies of the topics in this document is contingent upon the financial ability of both countries to support the efforts in earthquake hazard mitigation.

Findings resulting from this workshop will be conveyed to the officers of the respective Academies in advance of the next joint meeting of Academy officers, tentatively scheduled for the spring of 1992.
