A program of cooperative research on atmospheric chemistry between China and the United States consists of four subjects: (1) site selection for a continental baseline station in China through joint air sampling in order to establish a continental baseline station for longterm monitoring of gases and aerosols on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau; (2) joint planning and participation in the Global Tropospheric Experiment Pacific Exploratory Mission in order to investigate the atmospheric budgets and photochemistry of trace gases and aerosols in the atmosphere over China and over the Pacific; (3) measurement of greenhouse gas fluxes in China, such as CH4, nitrogen oxides, and other radiatively or chemically important species; and (4) development and application of regional and global models of atmospheric chemistry and research on related effects on environment and climate.
