vii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The research reported herein was performed under NCHRP Project 20-50 (10/16), LTPP Data Analysis: Influence of Design and Construction Features on the Response and Performance of New Flexible and Rigid Pavements, by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University. Karim Chatti, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was the Principal Investigator. Neeraj Buch, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was the Co-Principal Investigator. They were assisted by Syed Waqar Haider, Aswani S. Pulipaka, Graduate Research Assistants, and Praveen Desaraju, former Graduate Research Assistant, now Staff Engineer at Applied Research Associates Inc. Richard W. Lyles, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Dennis Gilliland, Professor of Statistics and Probability, assisted in the data analyses aspects. TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Web Document 74: LTPP Data Analysis: Influence of Design and Construction Features on the Response and Performance of New Flexible and Rigid Pavements examines the relative influence of design and construction features on the response and performance of new flexible and rigid pavements. According to the report, base type seems to be the most critical design factor in achieving various levels of pavement performance for both flexible and rigid pavements, especially when provided with in-pavement drainage. Subgrade soil type and climate also have considerable effects on the influence of the design factors. While the report supports the existing understanding of pavement performance, the methodology in the study offers a systematic outline of the interactions between design and site factors as well as new insights on various design options.
