72 Term Definition Account-based fare system A fare system in which customers register their personal information, preferences, fare media, and other information to track their usage, apply for benefits, load or replenish fare value, or employ other functions sup- ported by a centralized account. Fare processing is typically performed in the system’s back office to ensure that the customer’s personal information is secure and to apply appropriate fares to their trips. Bikeshare Bike-sharing is a system that provides customers with short distance, point- to-point trips using a bicycle. Customers may pick up a bicycle at any self- serve bike station (or at a specified location) and return it to any other bike station (or location) located within the system’s service area. Branded card A smart card that has the issuing agency’s logo. The card’s use tends to be restricted the organization responsible for branding. Card-based system Refers to a fare payment system that uses read-write smart cards that store information about valid fare products (or stored values) and the last sev- eral transactions. The card-based system relies on the smart card and smart card reader to process the fare and validity of the media based on fare rules downloaded to the smart card reader. Carshare A model of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour. The service tends to include gas and insurance for an annual fee. Convergent pay- ment strategy A move to bring different payment technologies for transportation services to a common or unified approach. In the context of this report, a conver- gent payment strategy assumes unification of not only transit modes, but also disruptive transportation modes, parking tariffs, tolling fees, and other transportation services like electric vehicle charging, and dynamic pricings. Disruptive mobility service Refers to new transportation services that are offered to travelers that are innovative, technology-driven. and non-traditional. These include car-sharing, ridesourcing, bike-sharing, and more. Distance-based fare A fare structure that charges customers based on the distance traveled from the place where they board to the place where they alight a transit vehicle in revenue service. Fare capping The maximum fare that is paid over a specific period such as a month. The strategy replaces period passes. Customers who use the system benefit from frequent use of the system; the approach also reduces financial liability settlement and revenue allocation across modes and divisions. Fare product A contract that is bought by a customer to use specific transit services. The product may be used once or several times depending on the product type. A single-use ticket may only be used once, whereas a period pass may be used over the specified period for an unlimited number of rides. Flat fare A single cost for access to transit service for a single trip from any origin to destination in the service area. Magnetic stripe card A magnetic stripe card is a type of card capable of storing data by modify- ing the magnetism of tiny iron-based magnetic particles on a band of magnetic material on the card. The magnetic stripe, sometimes called swipe card or magstripe, is read by swiping past a magnetic reading head. [Wikipedia, accessed 5/2/2016] Metrolinx Greater Toronto Transportation Authority. Metrolinx is the regional trans- portation authority for the GTA and Hamilton areas. Mobile fare app A mobile app that links to or stores a fare product (e.g., period pass) for the mobile device’s owner. 73 Mobile ticketing app A mobile app that links to or stores a ticket for the mobile device’s owner. Mobile wallet A mobile application that provisions a virtual bank-issued credit, debit or prepaid card in a mobile device. Sometimes these wallets are called “pays,” e.g., Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. Open architecture A system that is non-proprietary and uses open interfaces and standards to enable third party components to interoperate. Open payment The use of open industry interface standards and specifications for the elec- tronic remuneration and provision of transport services. Open specification “A public standard [or generally accepted specification] for connecting hardware to hardware and software to software.” [extracted from http:// encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/open+interface, 22 March 2016] Pay as you go Refers to when a customer uses a bank card (credit/debit/prepaid) to pay and access transit service (in lieu of one issued by the transit agency). Pay for use Refers to when a customer uses a debit card with stored value that may be managed by a multiagency EFPS or third party. The intent is that settle- ment for payment will be processed on a daily basis. PRESTO A transit card that is use in the greater Toronto and Hamilton areas of Canada. The PRESTO program is managed by Metrolinx Registering farebox A device that is used to collect and record every cash and electronic trans- action of each customer as they access transit service. Ride hailing A service provided to a person who requests a ride through an app. Examples of ride hailing services include Uber and LYFT. Ridesourcing See ride hailing Smart card “A plastic card with a built-in microprocessor, used typically for electronic processes such as financial transactions and personal identification.” [Google, accessed 5/2/2016] SmarTrip The branded fare media sold by WMATA. The multiagency EFPS is a card-based system. Third-party media Refers to an outside organization or vendor who provide media that is compatible with the multiagency EFPS. Zone-based fare A fare structure that charges customers based on the zone in which they board to the zone from which they alight a transit vehicle in revenue service. Term Definition
