Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

231      Appendix B Full Survey Introduction State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), such as Virginia DOT or Maryland DOT, build and maintain Enterprise Information Portals (EIPs) for many functions. They serve internal needs such as archiving construction plans or managing contracts, and external functions, such as supporting contractor bidding or providing traveler information. Their data can be large and can include online tools, camera feeds, maps, and archived documentation. Because of their varied functions and capabilities, State DOTs are seeking guidance on improving the quality of services through their EIPs. This project, Guidance for the Development and Management of Sustainable Information Portals, which AEM Corporation is leading for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, will provide guidance to agencies looking to better understand the technologies, architectures, and procedures to maximize their EIP performance. Functional criteria for sustainable information portals were developed through a series of interviews with transportation agency representatives across different subject matter areas to discuss the information portals that are used within their States or regions. We have developed this survey to gather input on what you consider to be sustainable EIP best practices. This survey has been developed to only take approximately ten minutes to complete. We realize how valuable your time is, but we hope that this survey is short enough that you will consider providing us with this important feedback.   Given your experience and knowledge of current portal technology please answer the following questions: Hosting On what type of infrastructure should the DOT Enterprise Information portal be built? 1. Cloud 2. On-Premise (virtual) 3. Mixed   Key Hosting Technologies  What are the key technologies you would use for system deployment and maintenance?   Continuous Integration and Deployment  What technologies and services would you use to automate continuous integration and deployment?   Expertise Areas  Choose the following option that best matches your area of expertise to direct the remainder of your survey: 1. Services (API Gateway, searching, GIS data processing and rendering, data stream processing, messaging, content delivery)

232      2. User Interfaces (web applications, mobile applications, desktop applications) 3. Storage (content archiving, content caching, content tagging) 4. Database (GIS database services; document database services; image, video, and binary files database services; financial data database services; sensor data database services) 5. Management Tools (resources and application monitoring, resources provisioning and scaling, content auditing) 6. Security & Identity (identity and access management, security audit) There is no requirement to answer all of the questions in the areas that you choose. If you do not feel you have the proper expertise to answer a question, please feel free to skip and move to the next.   Services API Gateway  Cloud On-Premise Mixed What services would you use to provide the overall API?
