Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

1 ACRP Research Report 185: Airport Air Quality Management 101 provides an introduction to air quality issues for airport staff or stakeholders who are air quality novices, whether new employees, career airport managers, board members, or interested neighbors. This report touches on all aspects of managing an air quality program, highlighting its importance to overall airport operations. A companion product to ACRP Research Report 185 is the Airport Air Quality Resource Library (available at https://crp.trb.org/acrp0267), which can be used to amplify and extend the information presented. The Airport Air Quality Resource Library is an electronic library including a wide variety of resources in one location, which provides easy access to relevant air quality documents and resources and greatly reduces the effort required to find and review key airport air quality references. The library includes a searchable list of published documents, resources, and tools, as well as short videos demonstrating how to use certain tools. Each entry in the list includes basic information about the resource, including a brief summary and a hyperlink to the original material. In addition to the videos demonstrating how to use certain tools, the Airport Air Quality Resource Library contains three new instructional videos to enhance the use of three air quality models. These videos can be found in the respective tools pages: • Lead Emissions Inventory Analysis Tool (EIAT) from ACRP Report 133 • Airport Construction Emissions Inventory Tool (ACEIT) from ACRP Report 102 • ACI’s Airport Carbon and Emissions Reporting Tool (ACERT) Additional information on how to use the Airport Air Quality Resource Library can be found in the User’s Guide in the appendix to this report. At the end of each section of the report is a list of essential references that are pertinent to the material presented in that section. These references pro- vide a greater depth and breadth of information for any given topic. Each was specifically selected because it has been widely used throughout the aviation community and acknowledged as a valuable reference for the topic(s) it covers, and most are not overly technical or detailed. Each reference is linked to the Airport Air Quality Resource Library to give the reader immediate access to the material. Many more references beyond those essential references are available in the Airport Air Quality Resource Library. To facilitate understanding, a glossary of specialized terms is provided. Terms defined in the glossary appear in boldface on first use in the report. S U M M A R Y Airport Air Quality Management 101 Terms in boldface are defined in the glossary.

TRB's Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Research Report 185: Airport Air Quality Management 101 introduces airport employees who are not environmental specialists to airport air quality issues. Airport air quality management is highly complex and technical, with many different stakeholders, including the local community and local, state, and federal regulators.

Larger airports have dedicated environmental experts; however, at most airports, environmental management is carried out by employees who are engaged in other aspects of airport operations or provide oversight of external environmental consultants who are executing the work.

This report is accompanied by ACRP WebResource 4: Airport Air Quality Resource Library.
