3 NCHRP Research Report 846: Improving Findability and Relevance of Transportation Informa- tion was published in 2017 (1) and includes a Guide that state transportation agencies can use to identify and adopt practices and tools for efficiently finding the information staff require to carry out their job responsibilities. An overview of the contents of this Guide is shown in Figure 1. The Guide begins with a discussion of business drivers for investment in improved findability at a DOT. Then, it describes three essential elements of information findability: information management, search and navigation, and metadata and terminology. Finally, the Guide provides a framework for planning and implementing findability improvements. C H A P T E R 1 Introduction Figure 1. Framework for DOT information findability.
4 Implementing Information Findability Improvements in State Transportation Agencies Following completion of NCHRP Research Report 846, NCHRP funded a continuation project to conduct pilot demonstrations of the techniques described in the Guide within several State DOTs. This report documents findings, lessons, and additional guidance based on the field implementation experience gained from these State DOT pilots. It is intended to be used as a supplement to the original Guide published within NCHRP Research Report 846.
