1 Automated vehicles (AVs) have made headlines with applications in the roadway sector. The purpose of this study is to identify the potential for advanced ground vehicle technologies (AGVT) to improve operations in the airside environment. AGVT may provide benefits and potentially increase the efficiency and safety of airside operations. Early tasks of this research project included the identification of AGVT applications in the airside environment, as well as identification of AGVT applications in other sectors that may be relevant to airside applications. Background information about AGVT is provided in Chapter 2. A discussion of applications and lessons learned from these applications and other technology deployments is presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 presents prioritized airside applications identified for more detailed evaluation. Chapter 5 presents a detailed evaluation process that can be used by an airport to evaluate AGVT, including assessment areas to support the following evaluation criteria: ease of adoption and stakeholder acceptance, technical feasibility, infrastructure and operational impacts, benefits, and human factors. Chapter 6 presents more detailed evaluation results for the seven airside applications prioritized in Chapter 4. Chapter 7 provides a summary of the key findings of this research, including one-page evaluation results and suggestions for research needs and priorities to advance AGVT into airside activities in the United States. Recent advancements in automated and advanced driving technologies have demonstrated improvements in safety, ease and accessibility, and efficiency in road transportation. There has also been a reduction in costs in these technologies that can now be adapted into the airport environment.

The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Research Report 219: Advanced Ground Vehicle Technologies for Airside Operations identifies potential advanced ground vehicle technologies (AGVT) for application on the airside.

Appendices B Through S are online only. Appendix A, on enabling technologies, is included within the report.
