Summary Flow Chart for Applying the User Guide Local Validation Similar to the validation conducted as part of the study, an agency should assemble data for a range of local pavements and compare the local pavement performance to the models’ predicted performance. As noted in the report, the models should only be applied within the 5th to 95th range of input values used to develop the model as provided in Table 2. Refer to the final report to find more detail on the input data ranges. The agency should assemble two sets of Collect agency input and performance data to validate each model. Compare agency measured performance data to predicted model performance values. Insert agency input data into each model. MODEL VALIDATION Does the model reflect agency measured performance? YES NO Examine model output for predicted air voids influence. Insert input data into the model. Assemble input data for common groups of pavements. Determine if a construction specification change is warranted for as-constructed air voids. Follow model development steps to create models. Assemble input and performance data for broad range of pavements. Continue with model validation.

Several controlled laboratory studies have shown that air voids (AV) can have a large effect on the performance of asphalt pavements. AVs that are either too high or too low can cause a reduction in pavement life.

The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Web-Only Document 299: Investigating the Relationship of As-Constructed Asphalt Pavement Air Voids to Pavement Performance determines the effect of in-place AVs on the performance of asphalt concrete (AC) pavements.

The document also has supplemental appendices that are available by request to Ed Harrigan. They include data sets for LTPP, Pavement ME Design Validation, MnROAD Validation, and NCAT Validation.
