APPENDIX C 150 GPS TECHNICAL OVERVIEW The technical and operational characteristics of GPS are organized into three distinct segments: the space segment, the operational control segment, and the user equipment segment. The GPS signals, which are broadcast by each satellite and carry data to both user equipment and the ground control facilities, link the segments together into one system. Figure C-2 briefly characterizes the signals and segments of the Global Positioning System, which are discussed in some detail below. Figure C-2 Characterization of the GPS signals and segments. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that was originally designed for the U.S. military. However, the number of civilian GPS users now exceeds the military users, and many commercial markets have emerged. This book identifies technical improvements that would enhance military, civilian, and commercial use of the GPS. Several technical improvements are recommended that could be made to enhance the overall system performance.
