Surface Transportation Effi- ciency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 This landmark legislation provides funding authorization for highways, highway safety, and public transportation for the 1992 to 1997 time period; The ISTEA- explicitly recognizes the need to "improve access to ports and airports, the Nation's link to world commerce." This brochure is the result of joint cooperation between the Maritime Administration and the Federal Highway Administration and it identifies, for the port community, metropolitan planning organizations, and state transportation planners, opportunities within the TSTEA to address specific port-related policies and projects, and provides a strategic focus for insuring that port protects and plans are considered through the metropolitan and statewide planning programs. Its development leas been sponsored by the Military Traffic Management Command, and conducted by tl e Federal Railroad Administration. The Military Traffic Management Command identifies rail corridors important to national defense (the Strategic Rail Corridor Network (STRACNET). MTMCTEA designates lines of STRACNET corridors and between STRACNET and defense installations requiring rail service to accomplish their assigned mission. These lines are identified by link attributes in the FRA data base Source of Data Identification of STRACNET corridors through analysis of historical- and planned war and peace- time defense traffic. P9.4 Urban Travel CIzaracierislics Database Mode Multimodal Abstract This informational report contains data on Urban Travel characteristics for twelve U.S. Urban areas. The database is designed to be used for a variety of purposes. Planners in one urban area may desire to compare local travel characteristics with one or more similar urban areas. Or, lacking data on a particular characteristic of travel, an urban area may need to "borrow" a parameter from another. Researchers may use the database to test hypotheses about regional variations in travel behavior. P12.2 National Nigh way Planning Network Version 2.0 f~HPN-V2.D) (D) Mode Highway Abstract The NHPN-V2.0 is a data base of the major highways in the U.S. It is a foundation for analytic studies of highway performance, vehicle routing and scheduling problems, and mapping purposes. The NHPN-V2.0 is based on the U.S. Geological Survey's I:l,000,000 Digital Line Graphs (DEG). Some urban links were digitized Dom state-supplied maps to assure up-to-date alignments. The NHPN-V2.0 contains verified transportation attributes, such as sign route, FHWA National Highway System flags, and DOT/FHWA fi~nctionai classification codes. It also contains unverified attributes such as number of lanes, degree of access control, and median type. Source of Data U.S. Geological Survey's digital line graphs and the state supplied maps. P12.3 National Information Managemer't System FLIMSY and fl`e Cenlrn Trawl c Database (CTDB) (D) Mode Highway Abstract The National Information Management System (NIMS) managed under FHWA's long-term pavement performance (LTPP) studies now includes actual traffic data collected at monitored general pavement studies sites. The data covers traffic and truck volumes, weight distributions of axle groups by vehicle type, and equivalent single-axle load estimates. The infonnation is based on vehicle counts collected at more than 470 pavement study sites and vehicle weights measured at nearly 400 sites. The raw data are stored in the Central Traffic Database (CTDB), which includes hourly vehicle counts,.individual vehicle weight records, daily vehicle totals, and axle group distributions. The information is then evaluated, filtered, and summarized for inclusion in NIMS. Source Vehicle counts collected at more than 470 general pavement study sites and vehicle weights at nearly 400 sites. Attributes Geographic Coverage of Datm: 48 states and provinces.
